Debunking the myths: Can you have botox or dermal fillers before a holiday in the sun?

May 21, 2026

As summer approaches, one of the most common questions we hear at Dubova Beauty is whether it is safe to have anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers before travelling to a hot climate or spending time at the beach.

There are many misconceptions surrounding aesthetic treatments and sun exposure, often leaving clients unsure about what is actually safe and medically appropriate.

As a medical aesthetic practitioner with more than 23 years of experience in cosmetic medicine, I believe it is important to approach this topic with clarity, honesty, and realistic expectations.

The short answer is: yes — in most cases, Botox and dermal fillers can safely be performed before a holiday, provided the timing and aftercare are managed correctly.

Understanding the difference between botox and fillers

Although often grouped together, botulinum toxin and dermal fillers are entirely different treatments.

Botulinum toxin works by temporarily relaxing targeted facial muscles responsible for dynamic lines and expressions. Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are designed to restore volume, enhance facial contours, and improve balance and proportion.

Because these treatments behave differently within the skin, the recommendations before travelling may also vary slightly.

The Biggest Myth: “You should never have injectables before the sun”

This is one of the most common misconceptions in aesthetic medicine.

The treatments themselves are not damaged by sunlight. However, the skin may be slightly more sensitive immediately after injections, and certain precautions are necessary to minimise swelling, irritation, and unnecessary inflammation.

The issue is not the holiday itself — it is the timing.

How long before a holiday should you schedule treatment?

Ideally, injectable treatments should be performed at least:

– 2 weeks before travelling for dermal fillers
– 7–14 days before travelling for botulinum toxin

This allows:

– Swelling or bruising to fully settle
– The final result to stabilise
– Any adjustments, if needed, to be safely reviewed before departure

Many clients underestimate how common temporary swelling or bruising can be, particularly after fillers in areas such as the lips or cheeks.

Planning ahead is essential.

Can Heat Affect Botox or Fillers?

Another common concern is whether heat “melts” filler or stops Botox from working.

Scientifically, this is not accurate.

Normal sun exposure, warm weather, or swimming will not dissolve dermal fillers or reverse botulinum toxin results.

However, excessive heat immediately after treatment — including saunas, steam rooms, intense exercise, or prolonged direct sun exposure — may temporarily increase swelling and inflammation during the early healing period.

This is why we recommend avoiding:

Saunas and steam rooms for 24–48 hours
Intense workouts immediately after treatment
Excessive sun exposure during the first few days
Flying After Injectables: Is It Safe?

In most cases, flying after Botox is perfectly acceptable.

With dermal fillers, short flights are generally considered safe as well. However, if possible, many experienced practitioners recommend avoiding long-haul travel immediately after treatment, particularly on the same day.

Changes in cabin pressure, dehydration, and prolonged sitting may contribute to increased swelling in some individuals.

For this reason, we often recommend allowing at least several days between filler appointments and long-distance travel whenever possible.

Why Professional Assessment Matters

Not every client should follow the same timeline.

Factors such as:

Skin sensitivity
Previous filler history
Tendency to bruise or swell
Treatment area
Overall skin condition

all influence how the skin may respond.

At Dubova Beauty, every injectable treatment begins with a detailed consultation and facial assessment to ensure the approach is appropriate, safe, and tailored individually.

The Importance of Natural Results

One of the biggest concerns clients have before holidays is looking “overdone” in photographs or during social events.

Modern aesthetic medicine should never be about dramatically changing facial features before an important trip or event.

The most refined results are subtle, balanced, and natural-looking.

At Dubova Beauty, our philosophy is centred around preserving facial harmony and enhancing appearance in a way that allows clients to look refreshed — never artificial.

Professional Aftercare Recommendations

Following correct aftercare significantly reduces the risk of unnecessary swelling and supports optimal healing.

General recommendations include:

Avoid touching or massaging the treated area unnecessarily
Stay hydrated, especially when flying
Use SPF daily
Avoid excessive alcohol immediately after treatment
Follow all personalised aftercare advice provided by your practitioner
Final Thoughts

Botox and dermal fillers are not incompatible with holidays, sunshine, or travel. In fact, many clients choose to refresh their appearance before summer or special occasions.

The key lies in appropriate timing, realistic expectations, and treatment performed by an experienced medical professional.

Aesthetic medicine should enhance confidence — not create stress before a holiday.

At Dubova Beauty, we believe in a medically led, personalised approach that prioritises safety, natural results, and long-term skin health.
